[no, this is not a joke and yes, it's an actual invite to a party over the network from the username: cock.licking.idiot (and no, that's not a joke, either).

those who decide that they'd rather not be square will arrive at some unspecified patch of lake shore (thanks, klaus) at a similarly unspecified time (good work, asshat) to discover that something resembling a slapdash but heartfelt lake party along the northern waterfront. a couple of tables have been dragged out of nearby cabins and now hold a probably inadvisable quantity of foods, at least half of which don't belong at a party by any means. is this what rationing looks like? this is definitely what rationing looks like. there's also an alcohol table, filled pretty sparsely early on in the party but gathering bottles and cans throughout the day. (word of mod says feel free to wing it on what kind of alcohol we have!).

a number of chairs sit in a wobbly line in the stone-filled waterfront sand, most of them not meant for beachgoing but nearly all of them able to recline. about fifty feet down the beach seems to be the splash zone, where all water horseplay exists well out of range of splashing those sitting in beachside chairs. some people dive or cannonball off the mostly-sturdy pier, while others seem to be batting around a-... is that a beach ball they have? no, it seems to be a balloon that says "get well soon". how fitting. please, someone bring them a fucking beach ball.

(this is a mingle! go ahead and make top-levels or tag into other people's.)

[ Everything in what she shares holds something to catch North's interest, especially the idea that so many people here know what cages are like. She will always refuse to relate to humans on the same level she'd do so with one of her own people, but that isn't a sentiment she's encountered before, at least not in such number. Of course, this everything is something she almost hurls right into hell in favor of focusing on why are you, initially parsing it as why does she exist and preparing immediately to bristle right into a porcupine before catching herself and--oh. Yes. Fine, she's being asked what she's chosen to perform like...what, an act of kindness? Shit. That's just ...so much more complicated than she wants to even try to articulate.

Still. She shrugs, eyelashes flashing down over her eyes in a cloud of ravens taking flight.

I told you. There's no point in wasting resources.

[ You're not going to trick her into saying she cares about what happens to any of you, OA!!!!!!! ]

That's true.

[It isn't care she's aiming for, exactly. Something... something more troubled. Something which, under the circumstances, is either an impressive act of mimicry on the part of a machine, or... personhood. OA leans on the latter. She's spoken to trees, conversed with sea creatures; sapience belongs to a broader collection of things than most people are inclined to believe.

The implications are, therefore, ugly. Human beings can be cruel enough to one another. A cloud crosses her expression and passes; in its wake, she simply shakes her head helplessly.
]

It's just... the easiest thing in the world to be indifferent to the people who have hurt you when they're hurting too.

[No, that's not quite is. OA squeezes her eyes shut and shakes her head again.]

No, to behave indifferently. Or... it feels safer. If someone repays indifference with cruelty, that's... expected, we can understand it. If someone repays kindness with cruelty, that's harder to take.

Maybe that's projecting.

[That's why she'd asked.]

But if it isn't... you don't seem to like us much, and we probably deserve it. You're helping anyway. That's hard. It... deserves acknowledgement, that's all.
