This log is a general dump for all log threads pertaining to August's Way Down We Go event - and in lieu of the lack of catch-all for August, you can feel free to do non-event log threads here as well! Go ahead and utilize vestigenet for any event-related network posts you'd like to make.
The main chunk of the event takes place between the IC dates August 17th (reveal of the hatch) and August 22nd (the latest the spelunkers can be freed before they drown). No rush leaping on this event post, since I know most folks are honestly still plotting about it.
All event information can be found on the July Event Infopost!
Please take special care in this event to label your top-levels with identifying information such as the IC date, any prompts specifically pertaining to event roles (spelunker, rescue efforts, etc), and/or 'non-event' for any non-event prompts you may include. Just trying to keep things organized!
I'm going to help solidify the plotting efforts over the next few days to help make sure everyone's on the same page, but none of it will be set in stone just in case latecomers want in too. If you want in, chime in on the spelunkers, rescue efforts, or support roles top-levels as applicable!

[ This seems to resonate with her, based on the way her expression twitches at something...more disturbed. ]

...I know what you mean. I think. When I first got here, there was a big fire...but then I came here - again? And that was like, a dream, or something. [ She shakes her head hopelessly. ] M'not sure what that's all about, but I'm sure it's nothing good.

[ Drugs, maybe?? ]

[Hardcore drugs, maybe?? His brows knit a little, comforted but also concerned that it wasn't just him.]

Most things here are nothing good.

[He sighs a little, but tries to perk up some. Huaisang is great at bitching, but he actually has enjoyed SOME things here.]

But I guess it's not all terrible. Forgetting all the things that keep happening... losing my arm... the birds are beautiful here and there's so many different people from such interesting places.

I dunno. It could be worse.

[ He should see the place she comes from, where - she thinks, at this point - more things are 'nothing good' than is the case in this new location. ]

The birds are beautiful, huh? Haven't noticed. [ But it does make her smile a little, and she takes a minute to glance treeward out of curiosity. ] How so?

Sh-Shhh, don't give them any ideas.

[Huaisang taps his finger to his lips, glancing around. Them. The ones who brought them here. Now on the subject of birds! Huaisang brightens, more than happy to talk about them.]

Oh oh, the ones here are all so pretty that I've seen. Many beautiful little song birds that sing so pretty. There's one I've been keeping an eye on, I want to catch him eventually!

[He beams happily at the idea.]

He's all sorts of vibrant colors, a little rainbow in this dreary awful place.

What, like a...tropical bird? [ She's seen parrots and toucans and things in books and art, of course, but never in real life. Those are the kinds she's picturing, though, as he describes them.

But, wait. Are they even considered songbirds? Probably not. ]

Whoa. Well, I'd definitely notice something like that. If I can find and catch one, I'll let you know, okay? [ As long as he's not going to hurt it, but he doesn't seem like that's what's on his mind. ]

Uhhh...

[He's not sure what a tropical bird would entail so he pulls out his phone to pull up a picture.]

Here here, this little one. Oh that would be amazing if you could catch one! I used to catch birds back home... you follow them quietly and let them get used to you and them one day-!

[He'll make a swatting motion with his hand, like he's trying to catch something.]

It's just hard doing things with one hand now.

Whoa... [ She squints at the photo, looking curious, and impressed. ] No idea what that one is, but it's definitely really beautiful! I'll keep an eye out. Shouldn't be too hard to spot, since it's so colorful, and all.

[ Is there really something like that in these woods? She doubts it, but will make sure to check just in case. That'd be something, huh? ]

I'm sure. ...Sorry. [ Ellie isn't going to pry, but instead shifts her weight, looking apologetic. ] Anything you can do about it? I mean - maybe someone here can make a prosthetic, or something?

I even took um... video? I think that's what it's called. The moving pictures! I took those of a lot of the birds here.

[It stopped being awkward to talk about a while ago for him thankfully. At first it was. He'd gotten used to the whole. One arm thing.]

What's a prosthetic? Someone could do that to fix my whole missing arm and hand?

That's cool. Maybe you can make, like...a catalogue or something of all the ones you've seen here. Is catalogue the right word? I mean more of a...guide?

[ Damn. What's the word she's looking for?

Anyway. ]

Well, I know they could do stuff like that back where I'm from. [ Before the end of the world, anyway. ] They could make, um...replacements for limbs. I dunno if we have what someone would need to make something like that here, but it's worth a shot, right?

Ohhh! What a good idea! At least it's something to work towards in this place.

[That's...amazing. They could just replace limbs and such where she was from? That must take a lot of skill and work to do!]

Mm, maybe... it wouldn't hurt to ask. [A beat then-] So your bow, where you're from are you expected to know how to fight?

Could be like a project. [ She should get her own hobby like that, really.

Ellie shrugs, glancing at the bow. ] Kinda? I mean, not everyone knows how to fight. Or...knows how to do it well. But, a lot of times, when it comes down to it? The people who know survive. And the others...don't.

[ Even the people who know how to fight die, though. That's just the world she lives in. ]

Any chance you know what guns are?

[That's... kind of how it is where he's from. Granted they don't have fungus zombies taking over the world back home.

Mostly ghosts and demonic beings. His sort are supposed to fight and or put to rest such spirits, but Huaisang didn't care for fighting.]

Are there not enough people to protect those who can't fight? And a gun... no I've never heard of that. Is it bad?

Not really. [ There's a sort of halfway roll of the head as she casts her gaze toward the forest floor. ] People are kinda all over the place, and not all of them are...the protecting type.

[ Even psychos and murderers watch out for their own, though, she figures. ]

It's like... Hm. Ever heard of a cannon?

Oh! Mhm!

[He nods his head, excited that he knows a thing.]

We... don't really have the need for them, but I know what they are.

Okay, cool. So...guns're like...little cannons that you can carry around. They're not as big, or anything, and they don't use cannonballs, but it's close enough.

[ Probably?? Now she's picturing a handheld cannon, though, and that's pretty dope.

(Is that just a rocket launcher?) ]

That sounds really dangerous... couldn't someone blow their hand or arm off?

[He's already had enough of that. Losing an arm that is.]

Oh, for sure. And worse. [ casual ] People're good at making things to kill each other with.
